Each year we conduct our field courses at facilities around the U.S. that are convenient and inexpensive for people who need to travel to the course locations. These facilities also offer the advantages of being close to restaurants, entertainment and local attractions. In some cases, our field sites are on the property facility, and in others the field site is just a short walk or drive away. In most cases, we use facilities that we have worked with for years and for which we have had positive responses from our past students. LAS CRUCES, NM We have a block of rooms reserved for our students at the Springhill Inn & Suites. Springhill Inn & Suites by Marriott Las Cruces, NM is the permanent home of The Nielsen Environmental Field School. Las Cruces is located at the foot of the Organ Mountains in southern New Mexico along the Rio Grande River. Las Cruces, situated in the heart of the Mesilla Valley, is primarily an agricultural area famous for its crops of chili peppers, cotton, onions and pecans -- many species of which have been developed for commercial growing by New Mexico State University's agricultural department which is also based in Las Cruces. Las Cruces is home to NASA and, just across the Organ Mountains to the east, White Sands Missile Range and White Sands National Monument. Strongly influenced by Mexican culture, visitors to Las Cruces are treated to some of the finest Mexican foods you will find anywhere! Visitors will also find miles of trails for hiking, biking and off-road trekking through the mountains and surrounding desert terrain where a variety of wildlife, including Dalls Sheep, bobcats, Oryx, mountain lions, coyotes and rabbits abound. Las Cruces is a popular location for many NCAA tournaments and hotels often fill early.
SAN DIEGO, CA For our San Diego, CA courses, we have a block of rooms reserved at the Hilton San Diego Hotel on Mission Bay, a top-quality hotel conveniently located near many of the key areas of San Diego and directly on Mission Bay. All classroom sessions will be held at this hotel as will the surface water and sediment sampling field session and the field session on drilling and monitoring well installation. The site for our ground-water sampling field session is located within a 5-minute drive from the Hilton. Our discounted rate of $139/night (plus taxes) includes complimentary use of the fitness center, and a modern business center with printing. Reservations must be made by March 12 to receive this special rate; after this date, only a limited number of rooms will be available at the rack rate which is significantly higher. Complimentary Internet access is available at selected locations on the hotel property. The Hilton San Diego Hotel on Mission Bay is conveniently located near the airport and Harbor Island, downtown and the Gaslamp District, Old Town, Mission Bay and Sea World, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach and the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. A city park is located adjacent to the hotel, which includes a walkway that parallels the beach, providing miles of walking, jogging, biking and roller blading trails.
COLUMBUS, OH Because of overwhelming demand, we have added a second offering of the Environmental Sampling Field Course to our Spring 2012 schedule. That course will be held in Columbus, Ohio May 15 - 18, 2012. The Fairfield Inn & Suites OSU is the host hotel for this course, and is holding a block of rooms for our students. This hotel is located just a 20-minute drive from the Columbus International Airport and a 5-minute walk from our field sites at the OSU Wetlands Research Park. Being near the OSU campus, the area has a wide selection of affordable restaurants including: American, Mexican, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Greek cuisine as well as seafood, steaks, comfort food and fast food. Many of these restaurants are within a 5-minute walk or drive of the hotel. An extensive riverside walking/biking trail system is just across the street, as is a nature preserve and the OSU Wetlands Research Park. |
