Are You a Past Student?  You May Qualify to be Grandfathered In!

If you completed a standard NEFS field course within the past 11 years (i.e. since and including 2000), you may be entitled to be grandfathered into the certification program upon completion of a written practical exam (or exams) corresponding to the course you completed.  First, you must complete and submit an examination request form, from the course(s) you completed, indicating your desired certification, and pay a non-refundable $50 fee per exam.  Then, the practical exam(s) from the course you completed will be e-mailed to you:

-       The Complete Ground-Water Monitoring Field Course (3 exams)

-       The Environmental Sampling Field Course (3 exams)

-       The Complete Ground-Water Sampling Field Course (2 exams)

-       The Complete Surface Water and Sediment Sampling Field Course (1 exam)

-       The Complete Soil Sampling Field Course (1 exam)

-       The Ground-Water Monitoring Well Design, Installation & Development Field Course (1 exam)

You must print out the exam(s), answer all questions on the exam(s) based on your attendance at the course and return the completed exam(s) to us for grading within 5 business days of receiving the exam(s).  To earn your Certification, you must achieve a passing grade of 70% or better on each exam.  After you have obtained a passing grade, you can then submit your Application for Certification.

This grandfather program may also apply to students whose companies or agencies had NEFS conduct an on-site training course (i.e. not an open-enrollment course for which NEFS accepted registrations) in 2006 or more recently.  If the on-site course curriculum was the same as that for a standard NEFS field course and if course completion certificates were issued to students attending the on-site course, the course qualifies for credit under this program.  If the on-site course was customized to exclude portions of the standard NEFS field course (specifically, if one or more classroom sessions or field sessions were removed from the standard curriculum), students will qualify only for a certificate corresponding to portions of the standard course (which must include the field sessions) that were included in the on-site course.  On-site courses that did not include field sessions (i.e. classroom-only courses) do not qualify for credit under this program.  On-site courses for which certificates of completion were not issued do not qualify for credit under this program.  Attendees of on-site courses wishing to earn certifications must complete the examination requirements stated above.  We are happy to assist you in determining which certification(s) may apply to the course you attended - just give us a call (575-532-5535) or send us an email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
